Welcome to the Austin Aikido Club!
We are located at 8312 Burnet Road in north Austin, TX (between 183 and Steck). map
We share the dojo with another aikido school. Our classes meet Tuesdays and Fridays from 7:00 – 8:30. Everyone is welcome!
Why are we a “club”?
Sensei Harry Nguyen, who began the Austin Aikido Club in 2000 deliberately called it a club because we all learn from each other.
What is aikido?
Aikido is a Japanese martial art performed by blending with the motion of the attacker and redirecting the force of the attack
Aikido is a non-violent martial art that teaches how control or escape from attackers while not harming them. It is dynamic, non-competitive and radically different from most martial arts. It requires very little physical energy, as the aikidōka (aikido practitioner) “leads” the attacker’s momentum using entering and turning movements.
The Art is powerful and graceful.
Rather than using force, aikido redirects the attacker’s energy. This makes it an effective form of self defense for women, children and anyone who is not overly strong or does not want to use force to defend themselves. Along with learning how to redirect the attacker’s force, aikido students learn many joint manipulation techniques.
There are two fundamental principles of aikido:
- A commitment to peaceful resolution of conflict whenever possible.
- A commitment to self-improvement through aikido training.
Aikido background:
Aikido is a relatively new of martial art. It was created in Japan by Morihei Ueshiba (1883-1969). Before creating aikido, Ueshiba trained extensively in several varieties of martial arts. Ueshiba also immersed himself in religious studies, developed an ideology devoted to universal harmony and peace and incorporated these principles into his martial art, aikido.
